Platense Axis
The river curled out up the shoulder of Uruguay
Becoming sea
As we ate the quiet miles
In the dark to La Pedrera.
The stars belonged to the same damp
Saltiness that whipped around my head
The next day the sea was creamy green
And my body full of stars
When I covered my head.
Midday was seraphic white
So white it was about to fall
And become another colour.
Seals blood-caked on the tide mark
Scribbles of flies above the fur –
Teradactal pedigree –
O land of the largest dinosaur -
Now bred with whites and Angus herds
Where the puma roamed
And horse lung was delicacy.
